Accounting for churches and religious organizations requires a different approach than traditional businesses.

These organizations are considered non-profit, and they do not offer products or services the same way that other businesses do. Instead, churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, and other religious groups rely entirely on donations and fundraising to support their organizations. How do you record these transactions in QuickBooks, though? Well, it’s easy…

Just use our QuickBooks chart of accounts for churches and other religious organizations! Fill out the form to download the free PDF version of our custom COA, and it will be delivered to your inbox in no time!

A religious organization’s income accounts should be based upon how the money is raised. Most people choose to create income accounts for benevolence offerings, mission offerings, and pledges. If people donate to a specific cause run by your organization, such as a youth group or a building fund, you should create new items in QuickBooks. If you charge for renting space for events or ceremonies like marriages, bar or bat mitzvahs, or funerals, then you could categorize those proceeds under a special services income account.

When it comes to expenses, accounts should be kept for events and costs that are considered normal for non-profits. Examples of these include meetings and conferences, evangelism events, ministry costs, printing costs (for promotional materials), and donations to other non-profits.
