6 Hours of Separation with Scott Cook’s Cousin

Do you ever just shake your head in amazement about what a small world it is? I did that today – I just couldn’t believe that who I found myself sitting next to on a plane. I was on my way to the QuickBooks Connect conference in San Jose, CA. You know the drill – it was a long journey, a layover, and a second connecting flight.

I sat down in Phoenix next to a young man on his way to San Jose from Minneapolis, MI. I should have known things would be interesting, as he was traveling a hard hat and a Beanie Baby in his bag and As the plane took off, we chatted. I told him I was on my way to the QuickBooks QBConnect conference and he said he was going to be stopping by his grandmother’s cousin house. His own mother has met his cousin, a Mr. Cook, 20 years ago at a Butler family reunion in Northern Wisconsin, near Cornell and Chippewa Falls (Eau Claire).

As the story went on, he began telling me something about making origami. They still have the shirt and elephant he made out of dollar bills at the reunion and then came the kicker, as it turned out, his cousin was actually Scott Cook, the Intuit founder of Quicken! I couldn’t believe the chances of that. Scott, I will keep all the rest of the secrets between Daniel Hammill and me, but I had to share this one about the oragami elephant for sure.

As I told him about my business, we couldn’t believe the six degrees of separation. In case you didn’t know, Intuit was founded in 1983 by Scott Cook and Tom Proulx in Palo Alto, CA. Intuit makes the personal finance programs Quicken and TurboTax, as well as the small to medium size business accounting program QuickBooks. All I can say is that it was a pleasure to meet Scott Cooks’ cousin and I am glad I could ask him to send my regards to Intuit’s founder.

Cheers, Scott Cook!
