Use a Chart of Accounts Not Included in QuickBooks

You may wish to use a Chart of Accounts that is not included in QuickBooks, such as the client below who asked about importing the National Association of Home Builders’ Chart of Accounts.

Q: How do I use the NAHB chart of accounts instead of using the one included with QuickBooks?

A: When creating a new company, select Other/None as the industry type.

To use the NAHB chart of accounts, either add each account manually or import them from an Excel file.

To import from an Excel file, open the File Menu and highlight Utilities. Select Import and Excel Files…

Make sure your Excel file identifies at least Account Type and Account Name. Refer to QuickBooks Help for other file specifications.

Click Advanced Import. The screen below appears.

Select the file and set up data mapping. Click Import.

Once you have imported the Chart of Accounts, press Ctrl + A to view the imported accounts. Make changes as necessary.
